Magnetostrictives position sensor for hydraulic vertical press

Discover how to achieve repeatable and precise control of the movement and the compressive force of the upper mold in the vertical hydraulic press

Hydraulic vertical press compresses the metal pieces, compacts them and changes their final shape.

The position and movement of the upper half-mold are controlled by a closed hydraulic circuit and cylinders that activate the movement of the columns. Magnetic mount strain sensors QE-1008W allow you to calibrate the impressed forces.

WPG- magnetostrictive transducers ensure consistent production quality thanks to 0.01mm repeatability. The SIL2 certification of the pressure position sensor garantees the high safety standards of the hydraulic circuit pressure.

Overview

  • Application: Positioning control of the upper semi-mould of the vertical hydraulic press with a repeatability of 0.01 mm and a force balance of the columns moving it
  • Products: WPG-A Magnetostrictive transducer – 400 mm stroke, KS – Pressure Transducer and QE-1008W Strain Sensors
  • Results: The combination of WPG-A and QE-1008W strain sensors enabled a repeatable and precise control of the movement of the upper semi-mould and the force impressed by it

The process

The task of a vertical hydraulic press is to compress metal workpieces in order to compact them, changing their final shape.

The position and movement of the upper semi-mould is controlled by a closed hydraulic loop; by means of hydraulic cylinders actuating the movement of the columns (see Figure 1).

The number of the columns and the dimension of the press depend on the tonnage required; which in turn is based on the workpieces to be processed.

Usually these are metal sheets of different thicknesses.

The challenge

Because of the variable thickness and the large size of the plate to be processed, a repeatable and synchronized movement of the two or four columns that move the upper semi-mould is mandatory; even in difficult working conditions due to the presence of high intensity shocks.

Especially in larger presses, an imbalance between the relative forces impressed by the four columns can cause damage to machinery and personnel. For this reason, the ability to measure the intensity of these forces and calibrate the press correctly is of paramount importance.

Last but not least, since the positioning of the upper semi-mould is achieved by means of a valve that control the oil flow of a closed hydraulic loop; a precise and reliable measurement of the oil pressure is a must.

Product benefits

WPG-A Magnetostrictive Transducer

  • The WPG-A Magnetostrictive transducers due to its repeatability of 0.01 mm, enables consistent production quality.
  • It can withstand shocks with accelerations up to 100g.
  • The floating cursor PCUR0202, fixed on the moving semi-mould, allows an easy installation of the sensors themselves.

QE-1008W Strain Sensors

  • The magnetic mounting QE strain sensors offer a fast and easy way for calibrating the forces impressed by the columns. Alternatively, the GE1029 strain sensors with metal clamp mounting can be used for continuous force monitoring.

KS Pressure Transducer

  • SIL 2 certification of KS pressure transducer ensures the pressure control of the hydraulic circuit is carried out to higher safety standards.
