The control of the feeback movement of hydraulic cylinders

Overview

  • Application: position measurement for piston feedback control in the hydraulic cylinders that move the retracting gangway of the yacht, with a required repeatability of 0.1 mm.

The process

The automatic control of the extension and closing of the boarding gangway has become very common in the most modern yachts.

To optimize the overall dimensions, the retracting gangway is telescopic, i.e. it is composed of several overlapping sections, which are able to extend or retract by a series of hydraulic cylinders.

Each hydraulic cylinder is equipped with a feedback control.

There is a need  for an accurate control over the movement of the gangway, particularly  during  the closing phase. It is  important to allow it to be retracted in the special housing only when the different extending sections are aligned, i.e. when the angle of inclination with respect to the base of the boat is zero.

The challenge

In general, the automation system is activated locally or remotely e.g. via smartphone.

The position of the pistons can be read using linear position transducers installed inside the cylinder itself, and the measurement repeatability must be at least 0.1 mm.

The automation allows to translate the position of the pistons of the cylinders into a measure of the angle of inclination.
